Tennis is one of the most popular sports worldwide, with millions playing every year. One of the advantages of playing tennis is that it can be played for a lifetime.
From junior tennis players who are just getting the hang of it to those competing at the highest levels, the USTA provides play formats and programs to give kids the best opportunities to succeed and keep playing tennis.
Through the USTA’s American Development Model framework, junior tennis players can learn to compete according to their age and ability to be on the path to self-confidence and having fun.
The USTA has created a youth brand called Net Generation - a celebration of a game where no one sits on the sidelines. Tennis is easy to learn and tailored for all ages and abilities, giving kids a game that will help them build friendships and learn skills they will use for life.
Net Generation aims to connect tennis providers with players in a safe environment that focuses on engaging more kids in sports in order to get them playing for a lifetime.
To achieve this, all providers are required to complete a Safe Play background screening that the USTA subsidizes. Coaches, organizers, and teachers can gain access to the expertise of the USTA as they work with leading experts worldwide to develop new play formats, curricula, and digital tools.
Players must be at least 5 years old to play in a USTA competitive program and will graduate from the Net Generation PlayTracker at the age of 11, on the first day of their birthday month. Ball color recommendations:
RED: Players aged 5-7
ORANGE: Players aged 7-9
GREEN: Players aged 9-11
Players aged 7-8 with 1,000 play points in ORANGE ball are eligible for GREEN ball. A coach assessment is available for players who have the skills to advance to green early.
All GREEN ball players will be required to meet 1,500 points in order to play in YELLOW ball events. At least 1,000 of these must come from win points. At age 11 players will age out of the PlayTracker/Youth Progression model.
A USTA Team Challenge is your first step into tennis competition. Team Challenges offer a low-pressure team environment for beginner junior tennis players of all ages to develop their skills with others of similar experience. These events are not focused on winning and losing, instead focusing on positive teamwork.
USTA Junior Team Tennis, or “JTT”, brings together boys and girls, ages 5 to 18, to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles against other coed teams. Beyond being fun and a great form of exercise, USTA Junior Team Tennis is a competitive, level-based environment that promotes individual growth, social development and life skills.

A USTA Junior Circuit is an event that uses a non-elimination, round-robin draw format for players of all ages. Gain match experience in a tournament setting and see your individual results. These fun events give you the opportunity to develop your skills through level-based play while learning and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
When you’re ready to play competitive tennis, USTA Junior Tournaments are a great way to get out on the court and test your game. You’ll have every opportunity to learn from the best, play against the best –
and even make new friends along the way.
There are seven levels of events ranging from Level 7 (Intermediate) to Level 1 (National Championships) and a universal ranking system that distributes points consistently across the country.

USTA has developed a nationwide competitive system that brings uniformity across all 17 sections and combines it to one, simplified structure. Tournament levels range from intermediate Level 7 events all the way to the National Championships at Level 1 with specific draw formats contained within each level.
This nationwide system provides consistent tournament levels and standardized tournament operations for all events—regardless of location.
The National Standings Lists are published every Wednesday. To view your junior player rankings, log in to your account at USTA.com and visit your profile. You’ll find the following tabs: ABOUT, RESULTS, RANKINGS, and SCHEDULES. If you believe there is an error with your ranking, please complete this form.
As a tennis player, it is important that in addition to just knowing and following the rules of the game, you also show good sportsmanship on the court. Sportsmanship includes respecting your opponents, playing fair, and doing your part so that everyone is having fun!
Nominate anyone who exhibited good sportsmanship at a junior tournament. It can be any player, spectator, official, coach, tournament staff member, anyone. If you want to recognize more than one person, submit additional forms. We love to hear about great sports at our events!!!
We are thrilled to announce the launch of the SuperSport campaign, a new initiative by USTA Missouri Valley in collaboration with the Match Tennis App that promotes sportsmanship in tennis tournaments. The campaign aims to cultivate a positive environment for all participants, regardless of their age or level of play.
As part of the initiative, a SuperSport Sprint will be held in 2024, with the winner earning a Grand Prize trip for two to the 2024 US Open. Additionally, prizes will be awarded monthly and semi-annually to players who receive sportsmanship nominations. For more information, please click the button below for details.
I recognize that tennis is a sport that places the responsibility for fair play on me. I promise to abide by the rules of the game, which require me to give the benefit of the doubt to my opponent. At all times I shall strive to compete with the true spirit of sportsmanship, recognizing that my behavior on the court is a direct reflection of my character. Whether my matches end with my victory or defeat, I promise to conduct myself in a way that honors my opponents, those who support me, and the game of tennis.
