Do you know about "The Code?" It's a summary of procedures and unwritten rules that custom and tradition dictate all players should follow. If players of goodwill follow the principles of The Code, they should always be able to reach an agreement, while at the same time making tennis more fun and a better game for all.
Friend at Court is the official handbook of the USTA, containing the ITF Rules of Tennis and The Code, as well as USTA Regulations for tournaments. It is the go to resource in the absence of having an official on court. All players should read and understand the ITF Rules and The Code -- it's only 40 pages (small book, little pages)!
Even a match played purely for recreation can run into confusing situations. For example, what happens when opponents cannot agree on a score? Who can call a let? How long can a server take between serves? Those answers almost always can be found in Friend at Court.
